Nagarkot Sunrise View Tour

Nagarkot sits on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley at about 2,175 meters, and on a clear morning its ridge line looks out over a 200 kilometer sweep of the high Himalaya, from the Annapurnas in the west past Langtang, Ganesh Himal and Dorje Lakpa. In the clearest winter air, a small triangle on the far eastern horizon is Everest itself.

The tour is simple and it works. We collect you from your hotel around 4:30 in the morning, drive the winding road up through pine forest in the dark, and have you at the viewpoint with tea in hand before the first color reaches the peaks. Sunrise here is not an event with a start time. It is a slow change you feel on your face.

On the way back we stop at Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the best preserved of the valley’s three royal cities, for pottery squares, the Nyatapola temple and a proper breakfast of juju dhau, the local sweet yogurt. October to March gives the most reliable views.

The Bhaktapur stop is not a filler. The old city is compact, car free at its core and at its best before the day tours arrive. Pottery Square is working by 9, the Nyatapola temple has stood through every earthquake since 1702, and juju dhau, the sweet buffalo milk yogurt served in clay bowls, is reason enough for the detour.

Prefer to sleep at altitude? The same trip runs as an overnight, with a hillside hotel in Nagarkot, sunset and sunrise from the ridge and Bhaktapur on the way back. It costs little more and removes the 4:30 alarm.
