Kalinchowk Darshan

Kalinchowk Bhagwati keeps her shrine on a bare summit at 3,842 meters in Dolakha district, and in winter she is the closest snow to Kathmandu. The temple ridge looks across to Gaurishankar and a long wall of Rolwaling peaks, and on January weekends half of Kathmandu seems to be up here throwing snowballs between prayers.

The trip runs over two easy days. A scenic drive of about 5 hours through Charikot brings you to Kuri village at 3,200 meters, a bowl of lodges below the shrine. The next morning you ride the cable car, or walk the steep hour if you prefer to earn it, ring the bells at the top, and give the goddess her due before the clouds build.

Go December to February for snow, October and November for the sharpest mountain views, or during Dashain when the shrine matters most. Nights in Kuri are cold in any season, and the lodges are simple and warm hearted. Bring proper layers and let the altitude set your pace on the final climb.

Kalinchowk Bhagwati is both an ancient shakti site and, in recent years, Nepal’s favorite winter weekend. The shrine itself is small and open to the sky, reached by a final flight of steps from the cable car station, with bells, tridents and prayer flags against a horizon of peaks. Gaurishankar, the mountain whose twin summits are named for Shiva and Parvati, stands directly across the valley.

Kuri village below the shrine has grown into a cluster of wood and stone lodges serving dal bhat, thukpa and hot tea by iron stoves. Nights are simple and cold and rather wonderful. Weekends and public holidays fill Kuri completely in winter; midweek trips get the mountain, the snow and the lodges at their calm best.

Winter access needs respect: the road from Charikot climbs to nearly 3,000 meters and snowfall can require chains or a walk for the final stretch. We run winter departures in 4WD vehicles with drivers who know the road, and we shift the schedule rather than push through bad conditions.
