Why this flight works the way it does. Lukla sits at 2,846 meters with a 527 meter runway on a 12 percent slope, no go around and weather that changes by the half hour. Airlines therefore fly early, in small aircraft, only in visual conditions. The result is a safe but weather sensitive schedule where morning flights are most reliable and afternoons often stand down.

Baggage discipline saves headaches: 10 kilograms checked plus 5 in hand is the firm allowance. Duffels beat hard suitcases, and most trekkers leave a bag of city clothes at their Kathmandu hotel, which any hotel we book will hold free.

One honest recommendation above all: build a buffer day between your Lukla return and any international flight. When the schedule slips, that day absorbs it quietly. When it does not, you gain a bonus day in Kathmandu, which nobody has ever regretted.
