Kathmandu to Lukla Flight
Seats on the short mountain flight to Tenzing Hillary Airport, gateway of the Everest region, with honest advice on weather and rebooking handled for you.
Every Everest Base Camp trek begins with 30 airborne minutes: the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, where the runway of the Tenzing Hillary Airport tilts up a mountainside at 2,846 meters. Small Twin Otter and Dornier aircraft carry 12 to 18 passengers, the left side windows fill with the Himalaya, and the landing itself is a story you will tell for years.
We book seats both ways, Kathmandu to Lukla and Lukla to Kathmandu, and we manage the part that surprises people: the schedule. Mountain flights leave early, weather changes fast, and delays or next day rebookings are a normal part of Khumbu travel. Build at least one buffer day into any trek that depends on this flight. When plans shift, our team rebooks you without drama.
One seasonal note worth knowing before you book. In the busiest trekking months, spring and autumn, Lukla flights often operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap rather than Kathmandu, to ease congestion. That means a road transfer of about 132 kilometers leaving Kathmandu between 1 and 3 in the morning. We arrange the transfer, tell you honestly which airport your flight uses, and price it clearly.
Why this flight works the way it does. Lukla sits at 2,846 meters with a 527 meter runway on a 12 percent slope, no go around and weather that changes by the half hour. Airlines therefore fly early, in small aircraft, only in visual conditions. The result is a safe but weather sensitive schedule where morning flights are most reliable and afternoons often stand down.
Baggage discipline saves headaches: 10 kilograms checked plus 5 in hand is the firm allowance. Duffels beat hard suitcases, and most trekkers leave a bag of city clothes at their Kathmandu hotel, which any hotel we book will hold free.
One honest recommendation above all: build a buffer day between your Lukla return and any international flight. When the schedule slips, that day absorbs it quietly. When it does not, you gain a bonus day in Kathmandu, which nobody has ever regretted.

Questions guests ask
Why do flights leave from Manthali instead of Kathmandu?
In the busiest spring and autumn weeks, authorities shift Lukla flights to Manthali airport in Ramechhap to relieve Kathmandu congestion. The flight is shorter from there; the trade is a night road transfer that leaves Kathmandu between 1 and 3 a.m. We arrange the transfer and tell you which airport applies to your date before you pay.
How often do flights actually get delayed?
Often enough to plan for it. Clear season mornings mostly run to schedule; cloudy spells can hold flights for hours or a day. This is Khumbu normal, and our team rebooks you without extra charges.
Can I buy just the ticket without a trek package?
Yes. We issue flight only bookings both directions, with the same rebooking help when weather interferes.
Is there a luggage storage solution in Kathmandu?
Every hotel we work with stores a bag free while you trek. Tell us and we note it in your booking.
