View tour →The 200 kilometer Prithvi Highway in a private car with an experienced driver, stopping for river views, tea and Manakamana if you wish.
The road from Kathmandu to Pokhara follows rivers the whole way, first the Trishuli, then the Marsyangdi, through a landscape of terraced hills, suspension bridges and roadside dal bhat kitchens. It is around 200 kilometers and takes 6 to 8 hours depending on traffic and road works, and doing it in a private car turns a transfer into a road trip.
You leave when you want, stop when something deserves it, and travel with a driver who does this highway every week and knows exactly which tea house has the good view and clean washrooms. Popular stops include the Manakamana cable car at Kurintar, river beaches on the Trishuli, and the old bazaar hilltop of Bandipur, a half day detour that many guests call their favorite accident of the trip.
Sedans suit couples, SUVs ride the rough patches better, and Hiace vans carry groups with all the trekking duffels. The same service runs Pokhara to Kathmandu, and one way rates include the driver’s return.
A word on the road itself. The Prithvi Highway is Nepal’s main east west artery, busy with buses and trucks, winding for its first half along the Trishuli river. Roadworks and seasonal landslides can add an hour; our drivers check conditions each morning and pick their timing accordingly. This is why we quote 6 to 8 hours honestly instead of promising five.
The stops make the drive. Manakamana’s cable car base at Kurintar arrives about halfway. Bandipur, a preserved Newar bazaar town on a ridge 8 kilometers off the highway, deserves 90 minutes and serves an excellent lunch. River beaches on the Trishuli invite a 15 minute pause with tea. Tell your driver what interests you and the day arranges itself.
Vehicles are chosen for the route: sedans for couples traveling light, SUVs for monsoon season and rough patches, vans for groups. All carry seatbelts front and back, and our drivers hold the speed to sensible levels, which is exactly what you want on this road.
Pickup from your Kathmandu hotel, ideally by 8:00 to beat the valley traffic.
Down the Trishuli gorge with a mid morning tea stop, optional Manakamana cable car visit at Kurintar.
Dal bhat or river fish at a highway kitchen, then the Marsyangdi valley and the first Annapurna views before Pokhara.
Hotel drop at the lakeside by late afternoon.
It is a busy mountain highway driven daily by professionals. Our drivers are salaried, rested and unhurried, and vehicles are maintained on schedule. We drive in daylight as policy.
Within reason, yes, that is the point of a private car. Photo stops, tea stops and the Manakamana or Bandipur detours are all yours to choose.
The 25 minute flight costs more per person but saves the day. The private car costs less for two or more travelers and turns transit into sightseeing. Many guests drive one way and fly the other.
Yes, one way is standard and the quoted price includes the driver's return. No hidden repositioning charges.
