View tour →Two quiet days at the birthplace of the Buddha. The Maya Devi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar and a monastic zone built by the Buddhist world.
In 623 BC, Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in a garden at Lumbini. The exact spot is marked inside the Maya Devi Temple, beside the pillar that Emperor Ashoka raised in 249 BC to record his own pilgrimage. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the four great places of Buddhist pilgrimage.
Around the sacred garden spreads the Lumbini Development Zone, a long park where Buddhist nations have each built a monastery in their own tradition. Cycling or walking between the Thai, Myanmar, German and Chinese temples is a lesson in how one teaching grew a hundred forms.
Lumbini sits in the western Terai, about 8 hours by road from Kathmandu or 5 from Pokhara, with flights to nearby Bhairahawa cutting that to under an hour. It pairs naturally with Chitwan on a longer circuit. Our two day itinerary keeps the mornings for the sacred garden, when mist hangs over the pond and chanting carries across the water.
Lumbini rewards slowness. Most day visitors see the Maya Devi Temple, photograph the pillar and leave within two hours. Staying a night changes the experience completely: the sacred garden at 6 a.m. belongs to monks, mist and birdsong, and the evening light on the Peace Pagoda is the best hour of the site.
The monastic zone is larger than most people expect, a good 4 kilometers end to end. Cycle rickshaws wait at the gate and bicycles can be rented cheaply, both better choices than walking the whole site in Terai heat. October to March is the comfortable season; April to June is sincerely hot.
For pilgrims we arrange monastery visits with time for practice, and for travelers interested in the history our guide walks you through the excavations beneath the Maya Devi Temple, where the marker stone and earlier shrine layers were identified by archaeologists in the 1990s and 2013.
Arrive via Bhairahawa. Afternoon among the international monasteries by cycle rickshaw or bicycle, ending at the World Peace Pagoda for sunset.
Early entry to the Maya Devi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar and the bodhi tree by the pond. Time to sit. Depart after lunch.
If the visit matters to you, yes. Day trips feel rushed. An overnight gives you the garden at dawn and the monasteries without heat or crowds.
Yes. The whole site welcomes respectful visitors of any faith. Photography is fine outdoors; inside the Maya Devi Temple cameras stay away.
By road it is about 8 hours from Kathmandu or 5 from Pokhara. Flights to Bhairahawa take 35 minutes from Kathmandu, then a 40 minute drive. Many guests come via Chitwan, about 4 hours by road.
Some monasteries accept guests with simple rooms and early schedules. Tell us if this interests you and we will check current availability honestly.
