Kathmandu Heritage Tour

The Kathmandu Valley holds seven UNESCO World Heritage monument zones, and this tour covers the four that say the most about how the city lives: Kathmandu Durbar Square, the hilltop stupa of Swayambhunath, the artisan courtyards of Patan Durbar Square and the great white dome of Boudhanath.

You travel by private vehicle with a licensed city guide who grew up with these places. The pace is deliberate. Time to watch wood carvers in Patan, to walk the kora around Boudhanath with pilgrims at dusk, and to hear why a living goddess resides beside Kathmandu Durbar Square.

The order of stops flexes with traffic and light. Mornings suit Swayambhunath, when the valley is clear below the stupa. A note on what these places are, beyond the photographs. Kathmandu Durbar Square was the seat of the Malla and then the Shah kings, and its palaces, courtyards and temples were built between the 12th and 18th centuries. Swayambhunath has watched the valley for more than 1,500 years and is sacred to Buddhists and Hindus alike. Patan, across the river, is the city of artisans, where the same families have cast bronze and carved timber for generations. Boudhanath is the center of Tibetan Buddhist life in Nepal, rebuilt with community donations after the 2015 earthquake and whiter than ever.

Entry tickets are bought at each gate and support conservation. Rates change from time to time, so we quote the current amounts when you book and your guide handles the queues on the day. Carry small cash for offerings and tea.

Dress is relaxed but respectful: shoulders covered is appreciated in temple courtyards, and shoes come off inside shrine rooms. Photography is welcome almost everywhere outdoors. Your guide will tell you the few places where cameras stay down, and why.
